It is causes a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) but is NOT limited to the respiratory effects. It can affect any organ in the body. The virus that causes this syndrome is SARS-CoV-2. As of March 2021, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA's) for THREE vaccinations: Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen. Pfizer is for individuals ages 16+, and the other two are for individuals ages 18+. Pfizer and Moderna are administered in TWO doses, and Janssen is administered in ONE dose. The main treatment is supportive care (e.g., supplemental oxygen). FDA has also granted EUA's for specific treatments, including antivirals traditionally used for the common flu and antibodies. Of note, the EUA for hydroxychloroquine has since been revoked.
